Justin Trudeau fails to take national security issues seriously

February 23, 2018 Ottawa, ON – The Honourable Erin O’Toole, Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs and Pierre Paul-Hus, Shadow Minister for Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness, released the following statement regarding the Chinese government’s seizure of Anbang Insurance, a Chinese firm that recently bought Retirement Concepts, a Vancouver-based chain of retirement homes:

“Last year Justin Trudeau approved the sale of Canadian owned retirement homes to Chinese firm Anbang, despite repeated concerns raised by Canada’s Conservatives that the Chinese government would take control of the firm.

“Today, the Chinese government confirmed that the CEO is under prosecution and that they have seized control of Anbang Insurance. As a result, Communist China is now the landlord of Retirement Concepts.

“The Prime Minister has failed to put the interests of Canadian seniors ahead of his interests with the Chinese government. Conservatives are demanding the Trudeau government release all details from the Investment Canada Act review of the Retirement Concepts acquisition to ensure that any undertakings given for that approval by Anbang are not impacted by these recent actions by the Chinese government.”
