Toronto van attacker may be free to walk the streets because of Liberal inaction

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Rob Moore, Conservative Shadow Minister for Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and Pierre Paul-Hus, Conservative Shadow Minister for Public Services and Procurement, released the following statement after the man responsible for Toronto’s deadly van attack was sentenced to only 25 years without parole:
“Another soft sentence for a mass murderer. That’s the reality under this Liberal government.
“Yesterday’s sentence of 25 years without parole for the perpetrator of the deadly van attack in Toronto is simply unacceptable. The perpetrator of this heinous attack ultimately took the lives of 11 innocent people and injured many others, and yet will only serve 25 years behind bars without parole.
“Simply put, the time does not match the crime. The Crown had previously indicated such when it pushed for consecutive life sentences for this attacker. Allowing him to serve less than two-and-a-half years behind bars for every victim is not even close to proportional justice for this crime.
“Conservatives are once again calling on the Liberal government to use every means necessary to ensure the perpetrators of mass murders serve sentences that reflect the severity of their crime and consider the value of every life lost in these senseless acts.
“Conservatives will always stand with victims and defend their rights. We will advocate for legislation that keeps perpetrators of heinous crimes locked behind bars, and urge the Liberals to put victims first.”
